5-Second Review: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
More like 2-second review. Thing is, I was going to pick up Gone Girl, but then I read the blurb of this one-- and it pretty much has my name on it. I won't recap the plot (everyone else did already) so I'll just say it was amazing. Atmospheric, dark, and really messed-up. Not a single one of the characters was likable-- and that's the beauty of it. It's easy to get cheap sympathy for a woobie character, but to make you care what happens to someone you despise-- now that's art, and Gillian Flynn is good at it. In fact, Dark Places pokes fun at and gleefully deconstructs that whole trope: our heroic survivor is a kleptomaniac with a huge sense of entitlement and overall not a pleasant person.
